Mahale Mountains NP




National Park Mahale Mountains is home to 1000 chimpanzees and several other primate species, mammals, birds and other animals. It is covering about 1.610 km2 (615 sq. miles) and it is roughly 30 times larger then Gombe Stream National Park on a north side. The park was established in 1980, when it was still a place to live for Batongwe and Waholoholo tribes, but there was never a big population of them.
Location
Somewhere on the half length of Lake Tanganyika is located National Park Mahale Mountains. It’s lying on lakes eastern shore.
Natural heritage
Many people consider this park as one of the very remote places because it is reachable only by air or by ferry on Lake Tanganyika. Inside of the park there are no means of transportation, the only way to go around is walk. There are quite some walking treks that give you possibility to search around the park.
Vegetation
The area is rich in diverse vegetation. It has nothing less then seven vegetation zones. It offer grass steppe, acacia savanna, baobabs woodland, riverine forest, rainforest and montane forest.
Wildlife
The most important part of park is wildlife with enormous concentration of chimpanzee compare to other national parks that have usually none. It is fascinating experience to come into contact with chimpanzee families. The studies about them are going on from 1961. Today this is one of the last places in Africa and also in the world where it is possible to watch chimpanzees in their natural habitat and observe their daily lives in close proximity.
Beside main attraction Mahale Mountains are rewarded with some other species like: warthog, other monkeys, elephant, zebra, buffalo, roan and sable antelope, giraffes, squirrel and many birds.
Travel condition
It is not allowed for children less then 10 years old to visit the chimpanzees as well as all the visitors who have a contagious disease.
