Mount Meru
137 km2
Arusha National Park might not be the biggest name on the safari circuit, but wow—it’s full of surprises. Nestled at the foothills of Mount Meru, this park is all about dramatic landscapes, rich biodiversity, and unique safari experiences you won’t find elsewhere.
Perfect for day trips or as a gentle start to a longer safari, Arusha National Park proves that great adventures don’t always come in massive packages.
What sets Arusha National Park apart is its diversity packed into a small area.
Here’s why it stands out:
Dominated by Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest peak
Home to the scenic Momella Lakes
One of the few parks offering walking safaris
Excellent birdwatching
Rarely crowded
It’s a peaceful, scenic alternative to busier safari parks.
Mount Meru rises to 4,566 meters, creating a stunning backdrop for the park. While not as famous as Mount Kilimanjaro, Meru is a serious beauty—often wrapped in clouds and glowing at sunrise.
For adventurous travelers, Mount Meru trekking is a highlight, offering multi-day hikes through forest and alpine zones, with chances to spot wildlife along the way.
💡 Many climbers use Mount Meru as preparation for Kilimanjaro.
Arusha National Park doesn’t have the Big Five, but it more than makes up for it with variety and scenery.
Giraffes
Zebras
Buffalo
Warthogs
Blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys
Flamingos on Momella Lakes
Fish eagles
Kingfishers and herons
Over 400 bird species
The Momella Lakes are a series of shallow, alkaline lakes known for their ever-changing colors. Depending on algae levels and light conditions, the lakes can appear turquoise, emerald, or deep blue.
They attract:
Flamingos
Pelicans
Waterfowl
Cruising along the lakes during a game drive feels calm, scenic, and almost meditative.
Arusha National Park is a year-round destination, but certain seasons shine brighter.
Clear mountain views
Comfortable temperatures
Excellent wildlife visibility
Lush vegetation and fewer crowds
Peak birdwatching
Occasional afternoon showers
Arusha offers some of the most varied safari activities in Tanzania.
Enjoy relaxed drives through forest, grassland, and lakeside habitats.
One of the few parks where you can safely explore on foot with an armed ranger—an unforgettable experience.
Seasonal canoe safaris on the Momella Lakes offer close-up bird and wildlife viewing.
Multi-day hikes up Mount Meru for adventurous travelers.
Posted on Tiffany IVerified Best Company Our experience with Sunset Arica Safari in Arusha Tanzania was truly exceptional. From the moment we arrived, we felt completely taken care of, and every detail of our trip was handled with care and professionalism. A special thank you to Godifrey, who made the entire journey even more memorable. His knowledge, warmth, and great sense of humor added so much fun to our safari. Godfrey and his team at Sunset African Safari organized an absolutely amazing trip for me and my family in July last year. We completed an 8-day Kilimanjaro climb via the Lemosho Route, followed by a 6-day safari through Tarangire National Park, with 2 nights in Serengeti National Park, a visit to Ngorongoro Crater, and finishing at Lake Manyara National Park, including a visit to the Masai Bomas. Everything was perfectly arranged from start to finish – communication, logistics, and attention to detail were outstanding. The mountain team was professional and supportive, making our summit experience unforgettable. The safari was just as incredible, with amazing wildlife and knowledgeable, friendly guides. I highly recommend Godfrey and his team to anyone looking for a well-organized and unforgettable Tanzania adventure!Posted on Anna FVerified Great safari tour Great safari experience, very kind quide, we loved the tour! Everything was perfectly planned and organised.Posted on Chris TVerified Super Nice. Recommendation! Traumhaft! Klare Empfehlung. DankePosted on Alexander BVerified Unforgettable Safari Experience in Tanzania – Choose the Bigger Package! We had an incredible safari experience in Tanzania, and it was truly one of the most unforgettable trips of our lives. The wildlife, the landscapes, and the overall organization were outstanding. Every day was exciting and full of new impressions. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone considering a safari. And one honest piece of advice: always choose the bigger package. What you will see and experience there is something you will never forget. It is absolutely worth it. Tanzania exceeded all our expectations.Posted on Pathfinder765744Verified Trip of a life time Safari of a life time. We booked a family safari for 8 days with my family, Godfrey was super amazing in communication, he was very quick to answer all our questions. For someone coming from New Zealand to Tanzania for the first time, we couldn't make it without his help. We went to Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti, we saw all the Big five. Our driver Omaru he was amazing, he knows a lot of stories about wildlife and people's culture, he really make our trip memorable. We will recommend this company to our Kiwi friends back in New Zealand. Thank you so much Godfrey for your hard work to manage putting together our trip.Posted on Steph9616Verified An amazing hiking experience I was recommended Sunset Africa through my volunteering company and I would recommend them. I just finished hiking Mount Kilimanjaro and it was great! My guide Hassan was excellent and the rest of the crew Dallah, Jackson, Lorenzo, Seleman, Milwadi and Jumanne made the trip amazing and very enjoyable. I hiked solo and felt really looked after and supported and I made it to the top! Godfrey was responsive to emails and was very friendly in person. I was asked to pay cash for the trip which is considered normal in Tanzania due to bank fees, etc, however it was a lot of money and did catch me off guard as I had to go to the bank. Hassan met me the day before our trip to go through my equipment and to talk about our plans. Overall, an amazing experience.Posted on Molly OVerified Mount Kilimanjaro Trek I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with Sunset African Safaris and they were brilliant! My guide, Hassan, was nothing short of exceptional and got me all the way to the summit. The rest of the crew were all so kind, especially Ally, who made sure I had everything I needed and that I was comfortable every day. Great experience all round!Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
