Dry Season (June to October)
Greate Wildebeest Migration
2,850 km2
If elephants are high on your safari wish list—and let’s be honest, they usually are—Tarangire National Park will steal your heart. This underrated gem on Tanzania’s northern safari circuit is all about raw landscapes, massive elephant herds, and a laid-back, uncrowded safari vibe.
Often overshadowed by its famous neighbors, Tarangire quietly delivers some of the best wildlife encounters in Tanzania, especially during the dry season.
Tarangire National Park is located in northern Tanzania, about two hours southwest of Arusha. It forms part of the popular northern safari circuit, alongside Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro, and Serengeti.
Covering approximately 2,850 square kilometers, the park is named after the Tarangire River, which acts as a vital water source for wildlife during the dry months.
Tarangire doesn’t shout—it impresses quietly.
Here’s what makes it stand out:
Home to some of the largest elephant herds in East Africa
Iconic ancient baobab trees dotting the landscape
High wildlife density during the dry season
Fewer crowds than Serengeti and Ngorongoro
Excellent birdwatching with over 550 species
If you love space, scenery, and authentic safari moments, Tarangire is your park.
Tarangire National Park is famous for elephants—lots of them.
During the dry season, hundreds of elephants gather along the Tarangire River, creating unforgettable scenes of families bathing, playing, and interacting just meters from your safari vehicle.
Seeing these gentle giants up close, in their natural habitat, is nothing short of awe-inspiring.
While elephants take center stage, Tarangire offers much more.
Lions and leopards
Buffalo herds
Giraffes and zebras
Wildebeest and eland
Impalas and waterbucks
Kori bustard (world’s heaviest flying bird)
Yellow-collared lovebirds
Eagles, owls, and hornbills
Seasonal migratory birds
Timing is key when planning a Tarangire safari.

Godfrey and his team at Sunset African Safari organized an absolutely amazing trip for me and my family in July last year. We completed an 8-day Kilimanjaro climb via the Lemosho Route, followed by a 6-day safari through Tarangire National Park, with 2 nights in Serengeti National Park, a visit to Ngorongoro Crater, and finishing at Lake Manyara National Park, including a visit to the Masai Bomas. Everything was perfectly arranged from start to finish – communication, logistics, and attention to detail were outstanding. The mountain team was professional and supportive, making our summit experience unforgettable. The safari was just as incredible, with amazing wildlife and knowledgeable, friendly guides. I highly recommend Godfrey and his team to anyone looking for a well-organized and unforgettable Tanzania adventure!Posted on Anna FVerified Great safari tour Great safari experience, very kind quide, we loved the tour! Everything was perfectly planned and organised.Posted on Chris TVerified Super Nice. Recommendation! Traumhaft! Klare Empfehlung. DankePosted on Alexander BVerified Unforgettable Safari Experience in Tanzania – Choose the Bigger Package! We had an incredible safari experience in Tanzania, and it was truly one of the most unforgettable trips of our lives. The wildlife, the landscapes, and the overall organization were outstanding. Every day was exciting and full of new impressions. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone considering a safari. And one honest piece of advice: always choose the bigger package. What you will see and experience there is something you will never forget. It is absolutely worth it. Tanzania exceeded all our expectations.Posted on Pathfinder765744Verified Trip of a life time Safari of a life time. We booked a family safari for 8 days with my family, Godfrey was super amazing in communication, he was very quick to answer all our questions. For someone coming from New Zealand to Tanzania for the first time, we couldn't make it without his help. We went to Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti, we saw all the Big five. Our driver Omaru he was amazing, he knows a lot of stories about wildlife and people's culture, he really make our trip memorable. We will recommend this company to our Kiwi friends back in New Zealand. Thank you so much Godfrey for your hard work to manage putting together our trip.Posted on Steph9616Verified An amazing hiking experience I was recommended Sunset Africa through my volunteering company and I would recommend them. I just finished hiking Mount Kilimanjaro and it was great! My guide Hassan was excellent and the rest of the crew Dallah, Jackson, Lorenzo, Seleman, Milwadi and Jumanne made the trip amazing and very enjoyable. I hiked solo and felt really looked after and supported and I made it to the top! Godfrey was responsive to emails and was very friendly in person. I was asked to pay cash for the trip which is considered normal in Tanzania due to bank fees, etc, however it was a lot of money and did catch me off guard as I had to go to the bank. Hassan met me the day before our trip to go through my equipment and to talk about our plans. Overall, an amazing experience.Posted on Molly OVerified Mount Kilimanjaro Trek I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with Sunset African Safaris and they were brilliant! My guide, Hassan, was nothing short of exceptional and got me all the way to the summit. The rest of the crew were all so kind, especially Ally, who made sure I had everything I needed and that I was comfortable every day. Great experience all round!Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
