Heading 2: A Detailed Guide to the 6-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Climb via the Rongai Route
Day 1: Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be greeted by a representative from Sunset Africa Safari and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. Take the opportunity to rest and prepare for the exciting journey ahead. In the evening, you will attend a pre-climb briefing where you will meet your guide and fellow climbers, and have a thorough discussion about the upcoming trek.
Day 2: Rongai Gate (1,950m) to Simba Camp (2,650m)
After a hearty breakfast, you will be driven to the Rongai Gate on the northeastern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trek begins through dense forests, where you may be lucky enough to spot wildlife such as colobus monkeys. The trail gradually ascends, and after approximately 4-5 hours of trekking, you will reach Simba Camp. Rest, relax, and enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
Day 3: Simba Camp (2,650m) to Kikelewa Camp (3,600m)
Today’s trek will take you through the moorland zone, characterized by low shrubs and unique alpine vegetation. As you ascend further, the air becomes crisper and the scenery more dramatic. After approximately 6-7 hours of trekking, you will arrive at Kikelewa Camp, where you will spend the night. Take in the panoramic views of the Kibo summit and prepare for the challenges of the following day.
Day 4: Kikelewa Camp (3,600m) to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m)
Leaving Kikelewa Camp, the trail continues to ascend towards the Mawenzi Tarn Camp. As you reach higher altitudes, the landscape transforms into an otherworldly setting, with volcanic rocks and breathtaking vistas. The trek will take approximately 4-6 hours, and upon arrival at Mawenzi Tarn Camp, you will be rewarded with stunning views of the Mawenzi peak and the star-filled night sky.
Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m) to Kibo Hut (4,703m)
Today’s trek is relatively short but challenging, as you climb over rocky terrain and face higher altitudes. As you approach the Kibo Hut, the base camp for the summit attempt, the air becomes thinner, and acclimatization becomes crucial. Rest and hydrate well, as tomorrow you will begin the final push towards the summit.
Day 6: Kibo Hut (4,703m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) and descent to Horombo Hut (3,720m)
In the early hours of the morning, you will start the summit attempt. The trek to Uhuru Peak is physically demanding and mentally challenging, but as you reach the highest point in Africa, the sense of achievement will be overwhelming.
