Tanzania is widely considered one of the best safari destinations in Africa. The country boasts world-famous wildlife parks, diverse landscapes, and an incredible variety of animals.
Some of the most popular safari destinations include:
Serengeti National Park – Famous for the Great Migration
Ngorongoro Crater – A unique wildlife-filled volcanic crater
Tarangire National Park – Known for elephants and baobab trees
Lake Manyara National Park – Home to tree-climbing lions
Selous Game Reserve (Nyerere National Park) – A remote safari experience
These parks make Tanzania a paradise for wildlife lovers, photographers, and adventure seekers.
One of the most common Tanzania safari FAQs is about the best time to visit.
The truth? Tanzania is a year-round destination, but some seasons are better for specific experiences.
This is generally considered the best time for a Tanzania safari.
Why?
Animals gather around water sources
Vegetation is thinner, making wildlife easier to spot
Weather is sunny and comfortable
It’s also the best time to see the Great Migration river crossings in the Serengeti.
This period offers a different but equally beautiful safari experience.
Benefits include:
Fewer tourists
Lower safari prices
Beautiful green landscapes
Excellent birdwatching
The calving season in January and February is especially incredible for predator action.
Another major question travelers ask is about the Tanzania safari cost.
Prices vary depending on the level of comfort, length of the trip, and park fees.
Approx. $200 – $350 per person per day
Includes:
Shared vehicles
Budget lodges or camping
Group tours
Approx. $350 – $700 per person per day
Includes:
Comfortable lodges
Smaller group sizes
Experienced guides
Approx. $700 – $1,500+ per person per day
Includes:
Luxury tented camps
Private guides
Premium wildlife experiences
Park fees alone in Tanzania can cost $60–$100 per day, which is why safaris aren’t usually cheap.
A Tanzania safari offers some of the best wildlife viewing on the planet.
You can see the famous Big Five:
Lion
Elephant
Leopard
Rhino
Buffalo
Other common animals include:
Giraffes
Zebras
Cheetahs
Wildebeests
Hyenas
Hippos
Crocodiles
During the Great Migration, over two million wildebeest and zebras move across the Serengeti searching for fresh grazing.
It’s truly one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on Earth.
Safety is another frequent concern among travelers.
The good news is that Tanzania safaris are generally very safe when you travel with licensed operators and follow guide instructions.
Safari guides are highly trained and know how to handle wildlife encounters.
However, basic safety tips include:
Always stay inside the safari vehicle unless your guide allows it
Never approach wild animals
Follow park rules and regulations
Listen carefully to your guide
When these guidelines are followed, safari travel is extremely safe.
Packing smart can make your safari far more comfortable.
Here’s a quick Tanzania safari packing list.
Lightweight long-sleeve shirts
Neutral-colored clothing (khaki, beige, green)
Light jacket for early mornings
Comfortable walking shoes
Hat and sunglasses
Sunscreen
Insect repellent
Binoculars
Camera with zoom lens
Reusable water bottle
Avoid bright colors and camouflage clothing, which may not be allowed in some areas.
Most travelers spend 5 to 10 days on safari.
Here’s a common itinerary length:
3–4 days – Short safari (Tarangire + Ngorongoro)
5–7 days – Classic northern circuit safari
7–10 days – Full Serengeti safari experience
Many travelers combine their safari with Zanzibar beach holidays afterward.
Most visitors do need a visa to enter Tanzania.
Tourist visas typically cost around $50 (or $100 for U.S. citizens).
You can apply:
Online through the Tanzania eVisa system
On arrival at major airports
Always check updated visa requirements before traveling.

Posted on Tiffany IVerified Best Company Our experience with Sunset Arica Safari in Arusha Tanzania was truly exceptional. From the moment we arrived, we felt completely taken care of, and every detail of our trip was handled with care and professionalism. A special thank you to Godifrey, who made the entire journey even more memorable. His knowledge, warmth, and great sense of humor added so much fun to our safari. He went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable, informed and enjoying every moment. I just wish the animals were as cooperative. They truly are the best company to trust with you adventure.Posted on Pumba ReisenVerified Highly Recommended: Sunset African Safari! Godfrey and his team at Sunset African Safari organized an absolutely amazing trip for me and my family in July last year. We completed an 8-day Kilimanjaro climb via the Lemosho Route, followed by a 6-day safari through Tarangire National Park, with 2 nights in Serengeti National Park, a visit to Ngorongoro Crater, and finishing at Lake Manyara National Park, including a visit to the Masai Bomas. Everything was perfectly arranged from start to finish – communication, logistics, and attention to detail were outstanding. The mountain team was professional and supportive, making our summit experience unforgettable. The safari was just as incredible, with amazing wildlife and knowledgeable, friendly guides. I highly recommend Godfrey and his team to anyone looking for a well-organized and unforgettable Tanzania adventure!Posted on Anna FVerified Great safari tour Great safari experience, very kind quide, we loved the tour! Everything was perfectly planned and organised.Posted on Chris TVerified Super Nice. Recommendation! Traumhaft! Klare Empfehlung. DankePosted on Alexander BVerified Unforgettable Safari Experience in Tanzania – Choose the Bigger Package! We had an incredible safari experience in Tanzania, and it was truly one of the most unforgettable trips of our lives. The wildlife, the landscapes, and the overall organization were outstanding. Every day was exciting and full of new impressions. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone considering a safari. And one honest piece of advice: always choose the bigger package. What you will see and experience there is something you will never forget. It is absolutely worth it. Tanzania exceeded all our expectations.Posted on Pathfinder765744Verified Trip of a life time Safari of a life time. We booked a family safari for 8 days with my family, Godfrey was super amazing in communication, he was very quick to answer all our questions. For someone coming from New Zealand to Tanzania for the first time, we couldn't make it without his help. We went to Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti, we saw all the Big five. Our driver Omaru he was amazing, he knows a lot of stories about wildlife and people's culture, he really make our trip memorable. We will recommend this company to our Kiwi friends back in New Zealand. Thank you so much Godfrey for your hard work to manage putting together our trip.Posted on Steph9616Verified An amazing hiking experience I was recommended Sunset Africa through my volunteering company and I would recommend them. I just finished hiking Mount Kilimanjaro and it was great! My guide Hassan was excellent and the rest of the crew Dallah, Jackson, Lorenzo, Seleman, Milwadi and Jumanne made the trip amazing and very enjoyable. I hiked solo and felt really looked after and supported and I made it to the top! Godfrey was responsive to emails and was very friendly in person. I was asked to pay cash for the trip which is considered normal in Tanzania due to bank fees, etc, however it was a lot of money and did catch me off guard as I had to go to the bank. Hassan met me the day before our trip to go through my equipment and to talk about our plans. Overall, an amazing experience.Posted on Molly OVerified Mount Kilimanjaro Trek I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with Sunset African Safaris and they were brilliant! My guide, Hassan, was nothing short of exceptional and got me all the way to the summit. The rest of the crew were all so kind, especially Ally, who made sure I had everything I needed and that I was comfortable every day. Great experience all round!Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
