Stay Wild, Pack Smart – Your Essential Tanzania Safari Checklist
Planning a safari is exciting, but knowing what to pack for a Tanzania safari is just as important as choosing the right destination. Whether you are exploring the wildlife-rich plains of Serengeti National Park or enjoying breathtaking views inside the famous Ngorongoro Crater, packing properly ensures you stay comfortable and prepared throughout your journey.
At Sunset Africa Safari, we often receive questions from travelers asking what they should bring for their adventure. To make your preparation easier, we’ve created this practical safari packing guide to help you get ready for your trip.
A well-prepared packing list allows you to focus on the incredible wildlife and landscapes Tanzania has to offer. From early morning game drives to sunset views across the savannah, having the right gear can make your safari more comfortable and enjoyable.
Below are the essential items we recommend bringing for your safari adventure.
Before you think about clothing or safari gear, it’s important to ensure you have all required travel documents ready.
Make sure you pack the following:
Valid passport with at least six months validity
Tanzania visa or visa approval
Travel insurance documents
Vaccination certificates if required
Printed or digital safari itinerary
Copies of your important documents
Keeping digital backups on your phone or email is always recommended.
The official currency is the Tanzanian Shilling, although US Dollars are widely accepted in hotels, lodges, and tourist facilities.
Bring clean US dollar notes issued after 2009
Carry some Tanzanian Shillings for small purchases
Avoid carrying large amounts of cash when walking in busy areas
Packing the right clothing will keep you comfortable during game drives and outdoor activities.
Neutral-colored clothing works best for safaris because it blends into the environment and doesn’t attract insects.
Soft duffel bag or soft luggage
Lightweight safari pants
Breathable long-sleeve shirts
Comfortable t-shirts or tank tops
A warm fleece or jacket for cool mornings
Wide-brim safari hat
Comfortable walking or trail shoes
Lightweight scarf or buff for dust protection
You will spend a lot of time outdoors during safari activities, so these personal care items are important.
Sunscreen with high SPF
Insect repellent with DEET
Lip balm with sun protection
Moisturizer
Personal hygiene items
Travel-size toiletries
Some gear can significantly enhance your safari experience.
Tanzania offers incredible photography opportunities. From lions and elephants to spectacular sunsets, you’ll want a good camera or smartphone to capture unforgettable memories across parks like Serengeti National Park.
Binoculars help you observe wildlife from a safe distance. They are especially useful for spotting birds or animals that may be far away.
The African sun can be strong, even during cooler months. Applying sunscreen regularly will help protect your skin during long game drives.
While most safari vehicles carry emergency supplies, bringing your own small kit is always helpful.
Adhesive bandages
Antiseptic cream
Antihistamine medication
Electrolyte packets
Motion sickness tablets
Packing wisely can make a huge difference in your safari experience. When you bring the right essentials, you can focus fully on the adventure—watching wildlife roam the plains, enjoying spectacular landscapes, and experiencing the magic of Tanzania.
At Sunset Africa Safari, our team is always ready to help travelers prepare for their dream safari. From personalized itineraries to expert travel advice, we make sure every detail of your journey is taken care of.
Bring lightweight clothing, comfortable shoes, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars, and your essential travel documents.
When visiting Serengeti National Park, pack neutral-colored clothing, a hat, sunscreen, camera gear, and a light jacket for cool mornings.
For longer safaris, bring several lightweight outfits, laundry-friendly clothing, extra camera storage, and essential travel toiletries.
Avoid bright colors, heavy fabrics, and dark blue or black clothing which can attract insects.
Breathable fabrics in neutral colors like khaki, beige, olive, and brown are ideal for safari conditions.

Posted on Tiffany IVerified Best Company Our experience with Sunset Arica Safari in Arusha Tanzania was truly exceptional. From the moment we arrived, we felt completely taken care of, and every detail of our trip was handled with care and professionalism. A special thank you to Godifrey, who made the entire journey even more memorable. His knowledge, warmth, and great sense of humor added so much fun to our safari. Godfrey and his team at Sunset African Safari organized an absolutely amazing trip for me and my family in July last year. We completed an 8-day Kilimanjaro climb via the Lemosho Route, followed by a 6-day safari through Tarangire National Park, with 2 nights in Serengeti National Park, a visit to Ngorongoro Crater, and finishing at Lake Manyara National Park, including a visit to the Masai Bomas. Everything was perfectly arranged from start to finish – communication, logistics, and attention to detail were outstanding. The mountain team was professional and supportive, making our summit experience unforgettable. The safari was just as incredible, with amazing wildlife and knowledgeable, friendly guides. I highly recommend Godfrey and his team to anyone looking for a well-organized and unforgettable Tanzania adventure!Posted on Anna FVerified Great safari tour Great safari experience, very kind quide, we loved the tour! Everything was perfectly planned and organised.Posted on Chris TVerified Super Nice. Recommendation! Traumhaft! Klare Empfehlung. DankePosted on Alexander BVerified Unforgettable Safari Experience in Tanzania – Choose the Bigger Package! We had an incredible safari experience in Tanzania, and it was truly one of the most unforgettable trips of our lives. The wildlife, the landscapes, and the overall organization were outstanding. Every day was exciting and full of new impressions. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone considering a safari. And one honest piece of advice: always choose the bigger package. What you will see and experience there is something you will never forget. It is absolutely worth it. Tanzania exceeded all our expectations.Posted on Pathfinder765744Verified Trip of a life time Safari of a life time. We booked a family safari for 8 days with my family, Godfrey was super amazing in communication, he was very quick to answer all our questions. For someone coming from New Zealand to Tanzania for the first time, we couldn't make it without his help. We went to Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti, we saw all the Big five. Our driver Omaru he was amazing, he knows a lot of stories about wildlife and people's culture, he really make our trip memorable. We will recommend this company to our Kiwi friends back in New Zealand. Thank you so much Godfrey for your hard work to manage putting together our trip.Posted on Steph9616Verified An amazing hiking experience I was recommended Sunset Africa through my volunteering company and I would recommend them. I just finished hiking Mount Kilimanjaro and it was great! My guide Hassan was excellent and the rest of the crew Dallah, Jackson, Lorenzo, Seleman, Milwadi and Jumanne made the trip amazing and very enjoyable. I hiked solo and felt really looked after and supported and I made it to the top! Godfrey was responsive to emails and was very friendly in person. I was asked to pay cash for the trip which is considered normal in Tanzania due to bank fees, etc, however it was a lot of money and did catch me off guard as I had to go to the bank. Hassan met me the day before our trip to go through my equipment and to talk about our plans. Overall, an amazing experience.Posted on Molly OVerified Mount Kilimanjaro Trek I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with Sunset African Safaris and they were brilliant! My guide, Hassan, was nothing short of exceptional and got me all the way to the summit. The rest of the crew were all so kind, especially Ally, who made sure I had everything I needed and that I was comfortable every day. Great experience all round!Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
