Lake Manyara National Park may be small compared to the Serengeti or Ngorongoro, but don’t let its size fool you. This lush, beautiful park packs an incredible amount of wildlife, scenery, and surprises into a compact area. One minute you’re driving through dense groundwater forest, the next you’re gazing across a shimmering soda lake filled with flamingos.
If you’re looking for variety, beauty, and a relaxed safari vibe, Lake Manyara National Park fits the bill perfectly.
Lake Manyara National Park sits in northern Tanzania, tucked between the dramatic cliffs of the Great Rift Valley and the shores of Lake Manyara. It’s ideally located along the popular northern safari circuit, making it an easy addition to trips that include Serengeti and Ngorongoro.
Covering roughly 648 square kilometers, with nearly two-thirds occupied by the lake itself, the park offers a refreshing change of scenery from open savannahs.
What sets Lake Manyara apart is its astonishing diversity. In just a few hours, you can experience multiple ecosystems—something few parks can match.
Here’s why travelers love it:
Famous tree-climbing lions
Exceptional birdlife with over 400 species
Scenic Rift Valley backdrop
Less crowded than larger parks
Ideal for short safaris and day trips
It’s the perfect warm-up—or cool-down—on a longer Tanzania safari.
Yes, they really do climb trees.
Lake Manyara National Park is one of the few places in Africa where lions are regularly seen lounging in acacia branches. While scientists still debate the exact reason—escaping insects, staying cool, or simply relaxing—it’s a sight you won’t forget.
Spotting these lions is never guaranteed, but when it happens? Pure magic.
Despite its size, Lake Manyara delivers excellent wildlife viewing.
Elephants in large family groups
Giraffes browsing treetops
Buffalo herds
Hippos along the lake and rivers
Baboons and blue monkeys in the forest
Flamingos (seasonal but spectacular)
Pelicans and storks
Hornbills and kingfishers
Eagles and owls
If birdwatching is your thing, this park punches well above its weight.
Lake Manyara is a year-round destination, but each season has its own perks.
Easier wildlife spotting
Pleasant weather
Ideal for game drives
Lush scenery and dramatic colors
Peak birdwatching season
Fewer visitors
Flamingos often gather in larger numbers
Lake Manyara National Park offers more than just classic game drives.
Explore forests, floodplains, and lakeshores in one safari.
Seasonal canoe trips offer a unique, peaceful way to view wildlife and birds.
Guided nature walks provide a closer look at plants, tracks, and smaller creatures.
Visit nearby villages to experience local life and traditions.

Godfrey and his team at Sunset African Safari organized an absolutely amazing trip for me and my family in July last year. We completed an 8-day Kilimanjaro climb via the Lemosho Route, followed by a 6-day safari through Tarangire National Park, with 2 nights in Serengeti National Park, a visit to Ngorongoro Crater, and finishing at Lake Manyara National Park, including a visit to the Masai Bomas. Everything was perfectly arranged from start to finish – communication, logistics, and attention to detail were outstanding. The mountain team was professional and supportive, making our summit experience unforgettable. The safari was just as incredible, with amazing wildlife and knowledgeable, friendly guides. I highly recommend Godfrey and his team to anyone looking for a well-organized and unforgettable Tanzania adventure!Posted on Anna FVerified Great safari tour Great safari experience, very kind quide, we loved the tour! Klare Empfehlung. DankePosted on Alexander BVerified Unforgettable Safari Experience in Tanzania – Choose the Bigger Package! We had an incredible safari experience in Tanzania, and it was truly one of the most unforgettable trips of our lives. The wildlife, the landscapes, and the overall organization were outstanding. Every day was exciting and full of new impressions. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone considering a safari. And one honest piece of advice: always choose the bigger package. What you will see and experience there is something you will never forget. It is absolutely worth it. Tanzania exceeded all our expectations.Posted on Pathfinder765744Verified Trip of a life time Safari of a life time. We booked a family safari for 8 days with my family, Godfrey was super amazing in communication, he was very quick to answer all our questions. For someone coming from New Zealand to Tanzania for the first time, we couldn't make it without his help. We went to Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti, we saw all the Big five. Our driver Omaru he was amazing, he knows a lot of stories about wildlife and people's culture, he really make our trip memorable. We will recommend this company to our Kiwi friends back in New Zealand. Thank you so much Godfrey for your hard work to manage putting together our trip.Posted on Steph9616Verified An amazing hiking experience I was recommended Sunset Africa through my volunteering company and I would recommend them. I just finished hiking Mount Kilimanjaro and it was great! My guide Hassan was excellent and the rest of the crew Dallah, Jackson, Lorenzo, Seleman, Milwadi and Jumanne made the trip amazing and very enjoyable. I hiked solo and felt really looked after and supported and I made it to the top! Godfrey was responsive to emails and was very friendly in person. I was asked to pay cash for the trip which is considered normal in Tanzania due to bank fees, etc, however it was a lot of money and did catch me off guard as I had to go to the bank. Hassan met me the day before our trip to go through my equipment and to talk about our plans. Overall, an amazing experience.Posted on Molly OVerified Mount Kilimanjaro Trek I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with Sunset African Safaris and they were brilliant! My guide, Hassan, was nothing short of exceptional and got me all the way to the summit. The rest of the crew were all so kind, especially Ally, who made sure I had everything I needed and that I was comfortable every day. Great experience all round!Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
