The Machame Route is one of the most popular and scenic routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 m). Known as the “Whiskey Route”, it offers breathtaking landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and excellent acclimatization, making it a top choice for adventurous climbers seeking high summit success rates.

This 6-day Machame Route itinerary is led by experienced Sunset Africa Safari mountain guides and takes you through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and glacial zones before reaching the iconic Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi

Arrive in Moshi and meet the Sunset Africa Safari team. You will be transferred to your hotel for rest, trek briefing, and equipment check with your mountain guide.
Overnight: Hotel in Moshi
Meals: Dinner (depending on arrival time)

Day 2: Machame Gate – Machame Camp (3,000 m)

After breakfast, drive to Machame Gate (1,800 m) for registration. Begin your trek through dense rainforest, home to monkeys, birds, and lush vegetation.

After 5–6 hours of hiking, arrive at Machame Camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Machame Camp – Shira Camp (3,840 m)

Leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone, where giant heathers and volcanic landscapes dominate. Enjoy spectacular views of Kibo Peak and the Shira Plateau.

Arrive at Shira Camp in the afternoon for rest and overnight.

Day 4: Shira Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp (3,960 m)

Today follows the important “climb high, sleep low” acclimatization principle. Trek uphill to Lava Tower (4,630 m) for lunch and acclimatization before descending to Barranco Camp.

Enjoy incredible views of the Barranco Wall and surrounding glaciers.

Day 5: Barranco Camp – Barafu Camp (4,673 m)

After breakfast, climb the famous Barranco Wall, a non-technical but exciting scramble. Continue trekking through alpine desert landscapes toward Barafu Camp, your base for the summit attempt.

Arrive early, rest, and prepare for the midnight summit ascent.

Day 6: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) – Mweka Camp

Around midnight, begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak, passing Stella Point as the sun rises over the African plains. Reach the summit, celebrate your achievement, and take photos before descending.

Continue down to Mweka Camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 7: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Moshi

After breakfast, descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you will receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate. Transfer back to Moshi, marking the end of your adventure.
