The 8-day Rongai Route is the most gradual and well-acclimatized option for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro from the remote northern side of the mountain, near the Kenya–Tanzania border. This itinerary is ideal for climbers who prioritize safety, comfort, and summit success.
With extra acclimatization nights at higher elevations, this route significantly reduces the risk of altitude sickness. The trek passes through pristine wilderness, open moorland, alpine desert, and merges with the Marangu Route for the final summit push and descent. All climbs are led by expert mountain crews from Sunset Africa Safari, ensuring a safe and memorable adventure.
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transfer to your hotel in Moshi. Meet your guide for a full climb briefing and equipment inspection.

Drive to the Rongai Gate and begin trekking through farmland and pine forest. This gentle first day allows your body to adapt naturally to the altitude.

Overnight: Simba Camp

A short and easy trek through moorland vegetation. The reduced hiking time promotes better acclimatization.

Overnight: First Cave Camp

Continue ascending gradually with open views of Kilimanjaro’s northern slopes and the Kenyan plains.
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
Overnight: Second Cave Camp

A shorter day with a steady climb. The extra night at Kikelewa Camp significantly improves altitude adaptation.

Ascend through alpine desert beneath the dramatic Mawenzi Peak. Reach Kibo Hut early for rest, hydration, and summit preparation.
Hiking time: 5–6 hours
Overnight: Kibo Hut

Begin the summit ascent around midnight. Climb steadily to Gilman’s Point, then traverse the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
After celebrating your achievement, descend to Horombo Hut for overnight rest.

Descend through the rainforest to Marangu Gate, collect your Kilimanjaro summit certificate, and transfer back to Moshi or onward destination.
