The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as the most scenic and least crowded route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Beginning on the remote western side of the mountain, this route offers breathtaking landscapes, excellent wildlife viewing at lower elevations, and a gradual ascent that enhances acclimatization despite the shorter duration.
This 6-day Lemosho itinerary is designed for adventurous trekkers seeking a balance between efficiency and high summit success, while still experiencing Kilimanjaro’s full range of ecosystems—from lush rainforest and sweeping moorlands to alpine desert and glaciated summit zones. Guided by experienced professionals from Sunset Africa Safari, this journey delivers safety, comfort, and unforgettable mountain moments.
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi. Meet your mountain guide for a detailed climb briefing and final equipment check.
Overnight: Hotel in Moshi
Meals: Dinner (depending on arrival time)
After breakfast, drive to Lemosho Gate for registration before beginning your trek through pristine rainforest. This region is rich in birdlife and wildlife such as colobus monkeys and antelope.
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Overnight: Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Continue trekking through forest and into the moorland zone, where vegetation changes dramatically. As you gain elevation, enjoy expansive views across the Shira Plateau and western slopes of Kilimanjaro.
Hiking time: 5–6 hours
Overnight: Shira 1 Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
This is a key acclimatization day. Trek to Lava Tower, stopping for lunch at high altitude before descending to the stunning Barranco Camp, set beneath the iconic Barranco Wall.
Hiking time: 6–8 hours
Overnight: Barranco Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Climb the Barranco Wall in the morning, a non-technical but exhilarating scramble with panoramic views. Continue across alpine desert terrain to Barafu Camp, your base for the summit attempt.
Arrive early to rest, hydrate, and prepare for the midnight ascent.
Hiking time: 6–7 hours
Overnight: Barafu Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Begin your summit push shortly after midnight. Reach Stella Point at sunrise and continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
After celebrating your achievement, descend to Mweka Camp for dinner and overnight.
Hiking time: 12–14 hours
Overnight: Mweka Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificate. Transfer back to Moshi or onward to your next destination.
