7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro climbing on Machame Route

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi

Arrive in Moshi, Tanzania, where you will be met by the Sunset Africa Safari team and transferred to your hotel. Enjoy a full trek briefing, equipment inspection, and preparation for the climb ahead.
Overnight: Hotel in Moshi
Meals: Dinner (depending on arrival time)

Day 2: Machame Gate (1,800 m) – Machame Camp (3,000 m)

After breakfast, drive to Machame Gate for registration. Begin the trek through dense montane rainforest, rich with wildlife and towering trees. The trail is often muddy but scenic.

Arrive at Machame Camp in the afternoon for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Machame Camp – Shira Camp (3,840 m)

Leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone, where giant heathers and volcanic scenery dominate. Enjoy panoramic views of Mount Meru and Kibo Peak.

Arrive at Shira Camp, located on the expansive Shira Plateau.

Day 4: Shira Camp – Lava Tower (4,630 m) – Barranco Camp (3,960 m)

A key acclimatization day following the principle of “climb high, sleep low.” Trek to Lava Tower for lunch before descending to Barranco Camp, set beneath the impressive Barranco Wall.

This day greatly improves your body’s adaptation to altitude.

Day 5: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (4,035 m)

After breakfast, climb the Barranco Wall, an exhilarating scramble offering incredible views. Continue through alpine terrain to Karanga Camp, a short but vital acclimatization day.

The afternoon is spent resting and preparing for higher altitude.

Day 6: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,673 m)

A steady ascent leads to Barafu Camp, your base for the summit push. The landscape becomes a stark alpine desert, with sweeping views over the plains below.

Arrive early, rest, eat, and prepare for the midnight ascent.
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Overnight: Barafu Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 7: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) – Mweka Camp

Begin the summit attempt shortly after midnight. Trek past Stella Point and reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, just as the sun rises.

After celebrating and taking photos, descend to Mweka Camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 8: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Moshi

Descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificate. Transfer back to Moshi for rest or onward travel.
