The best time to visit Tanzania depends on the kind of adventure you’re looking for. Whether you want incredible wildlife sightings, dramatic landscapes, or fewer crowds, Tanzania offers something special throughout the year.
Because the country lies close to the equator, Tanzania doesn’t experience the typical four seasons. Instead, it has dry and rainy periods, each bringing unique opportunities for travelers.
For classic safari experiences with excellent wildlife viewing, the dry season from June to October is considered the prime time. During these months, animals gather around water sources, making them easier to spot in famous parks like Serengeti National Park and Tarangire National Park.
The good news is that Tanzania is truly a year-round safari destination. From the Great Migration to lush green landscapes during the rains, every season has its own magic waiting to be discovered.
At Sunset Africa Safari, we help travelers choose the perfect time based on their interests, budget, and travel style.
Like any great journey, Tanzania’s seasons come with their own highs and lows.
June – October (Long Dry Season)
This is widely considered the best season for safari in Tanzania. The weather is cool and dry, wildlife gathers near rivers and waterholes, and game viewing is exceptional.
Highlights include:
Clear skies and comfortable temperatures
Excellent wildlife visibility
Great photography conditions
The famous river crossings during the Great Migration in the northern Serengeti National Park
Because this is the most popular travel season, accommodation prices are higher and bookings should be made well in advance.
November – December and January – March
During the green season, Tanzania transforms into a lush paradise. Rain showers are usually short and followed by sunshine, creating beautiful scenery and dramatic skies.
Benefits of visiting during this period include:
Lower safari prices
Fewer tourists in parks
Excellent birdwatching opportunities
The wildebeest calving season in the southern Serengeti
For photographers and nature lovers, this season offers some of the most beautiful landscapes of the year.
Tanzania enjoys a tropical climate thanks to its location just south of the equator. Temperatures remain warm throughout the year, although conditions vary depending on altitude and location.
For example:
Coastal areas such as Dar es Salaam tend to be hotter and more humid.
Northern safari regions like Arusha have milder temperatures.
High-altitude areas such as Mount Kilimanjaro can be extremely cold.
Tanzania generally experiences two rainy periods:
Long rains: March – May
Short rains: November – December
These rains rarely last all day but can influence travel conditions in some regions.
A wonderful time to visit the southern Serengeti, where the Great Migration herds gather for calving season. Birdwatching is also excellent.
One of the best months to witness newborn wildebeest in the plains around Ndutu.
Migration herds begin moving west toward the Grumeti region. Rain showers become more frequent toward the end of the month.
These are the wettest months of the year. Some lodges close, but travelers who visit enjoy quiet parks and very green landscapes.
The dry season begins. Wildlife viewing improves as vegetation becomes thinner and animals gather around water.
Peak safari season starts. The Great Migration moves north toward the Mara River, offering thrilling wildlife encounters.
Excellent wildlife viewing across northern parks like Serengeti National Park and Tarangire National Park.
One of the best months for safaris, with stable weather and large wildlife concentrations.
Game viewing remains fantastic, especially in central Serengeti.
Short rains begin, bringing fresh greenery and lower travel prices.
The festive season attracts many travelers as migration herds begin returning south toward Ndutu.
Even during the wetter months, Tanzania offers incredible experiences.
Every year thousands of wildebeest calves are born in the plains of southern Serengeti National Park. It’s an unforgettable wildlife spectacle.
The famous Sauti za Busara celebrates African music and culture on the island of Zanzibar.
Held near the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, this international event attracts runners from around the world.
Visitors can experience Tanzania’s vibrant food culture by enjoying traditional grilled meat known as Nyama Choma.
During the dry months, Tanzania becomes the ultimate playground for safari lovers.
The breathtaking Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most wildlife-rich places in Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The legendary Serengeti National Park offers year-round wildlife encounters and is home to the famous Great Migration.
After a safari, unwind on the turquoise beaches of Zanzibar.
Adventure seekers can attempt Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, standing at 5,895 meters.
One of the greatest wildlife events on Earth, where over two million animals travel across the Serengeti ecosystem.
Now that you know the best time to visit Tanzania, it’s time to start planning your adventure.

The best time is during the dry season from June to October, when wildlife is easiest to see.
The long rains occur from March to May, while short rains fall between November and December.
The migration can be seen year-round, but river crossings usually happen from July to September.
Temperatures are usually highest between October and February, especially in coastal areas.
The dry season months June to October provide the most consistent wildlife sightings.

Posted on Steph9616Verified An amazing hiking experience I was recommended Sunset Africa through my volunteering company and I would recommend them. I just finished hiking Mount Kilimanjaro and it was great! My guide Hassan was excellent and the rest of the crew Dallah, Jackson, Lorenzo, Seleman, Milwadi and Jumanne made the trip amazing and very enjoyable. I hiked solo and felt really looked after and supported and I made it to the top! Godfrey was responsive to emails and was very friendly in person. I was asked to pay cash for the trip which is considered normal in Tanzania due to bank fees, etc, however it was a lot of money and did catch me off guard as I had to go to the bank. Hassan met me the day before our trip to go through my equipment and to talk about our plans. Overall, an amazing experience.Posted on Molly OVerified Mount Kilimanjaro Trek I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with Sunset African Safaris and they were brilliant! My guide, Hassan, was nothing short of exceptional and got me all the way to the summit. The rest of the crew were all so kind, especially Ally, who made sure I had everything I needed and that I was comfortable every day. Great experience all round!Posted on Raquel RVerified Private 5 Day Safari We had an amazing time during our 5 day camping Safari. We visited Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro National Parks. Our guide Elemesi was wonderful and really went above and beyond our expectations by getting close to the animals. We saw multiple prides of lions, plenty of giraffes and families of elephants, amongst other animals (cheetahs, leopard, hippos, buffalo & many more). We would strongly recommend Sunset African Safaris, booking was easy and they were very accommodating to our needs.Posted on Margo VVerified Safari Serengeti, Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara Amazing experience! Everything was well organized and the guide was amazing! Would definitely recommend.Posted on uitoostburgVerified Amazing safari tour with Omar Samen met mijn vriendin en 2 vrienden uit haar vrijwilligerswerk hostel een safari gedaan van 3 dagen. Wij kregen onze safari guide genaamd Omar. Posted on Stefan ZVerified 6 days private Serengeti Safari Sunset african safari is an absolutely recommendable tour operator. We had booked 6 unforgettable days in the Serengeti as a private tour. our guide Patrick is an excellent driver and knows a lot about the Serengeti and its animals. We felt absolutely safe in every situation. Our accommodation was in a mobile camp. The service of the staff, the food and the friendliness is unforgettable. These camps are equipped with everything you need. In our eyes, this is already luxury in the great outdoors. During our game drives we were so overwhelmed by all the animal sightings that this can hardly be put into words. All our respect to all the staff of Sunset African Safari. If possible we will come againHelene and StefanPosted on Ethan SVerified Superb experience! Sunset Africa Safaris is definitely a reliable and experienced tour operator! Thanks to our guide Omaru, our 4 days 3 nights small group tour(3 pax) in the Safari was surely above our expectations, and he knows where to to find the animals. While we were in the Safari, the only thing we need to do was to enjoy the breath taking views and the closeness to the wild aninimals; everything else (Transportation, lodging, food...) was taken care by our experienced and knowledgeable guide. My advice for doing a Safari tour: 1. Small group is better as you can move freely in the car to see the animals on both sides. 2.Plan your trip in advance and prepare the fund in advance in cash or bank transfer, generally credit card doesn't work well in Tanzania as there is 5% charge on the consumer side. 3.Bring warm clothes, SLR camera, binoculars with you. 4.Serengeti and Ngorongoro are must visit attractions. At last, a very special thanks to Godfrey (Owner of the firm) for solving my duplicate fund transfers problem in 2 business days in parallel!Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
